Now that I have the opportunity to work with other companies, I see many that initially focus on things other than people like an idea tool, or process, or budget. All those things are very important, but without identifying the right people to help launch innovations the rest of the necessary components of innovation are much harder to come by. Organizations should enhance their program first by identifying and empowering the people who already want to make a difference. Those helpful spirits are already there, but just need to be legitimized. They are present in all organizations but might be underground depending on the risk tolerance of the organization; and they could even be considered troublemakers and renegades because of wanting to do things differently. But if you find those people who are going to innovate with or without an innovation program then you have found your force multipliers.
